Hero of our yard: transformative leadership in the living environment

This article explores the concept of the "hero of our yard" – an active resident who is a key figure in the development of a neighborhood community and the transformation of the residential environment. In the context of limited effectiveness of management companies and weak institutional participation, it is these figures who initiate self-organization, restoring lost forms of neighborly interaction and creating new practices of engagement in the life of a residential complex. The "hero of our yard" is a charismatic local leader who not only solves everyday issues but also builds trust, unites neighbors, and imbues the community with a sense of belonging. This work is interdisciplinary: sociology explores the mechanisms of self-organization, psychology explores personality traits and motivational attitudes, and philosophy explores the symbolic significance of the hero figure. A systems approach allows us to consider the active resident as a structurally significant element initiating interactions in the residential environment. Aim. To understand who the "hero of our yard" is, what motivates him, and what areas of activity and functions he performs. Methods. A review of scientific literature on self-organization, leadership, neighborhood relations, and local communities. Results. The authors developed a conceptual model of the "hero of our yard" as a leader of a neighborhood community. This material will be useful for researchers, practitioners, and managers working on developing sustainable living environments. The presented model encourages a rethinking of the role of proactive residents as agents of change. The authors propose viewing the "hero of our yard" as a tool for creating a supportive, sustainable, and inclusive living environment.
