Harmonizing interethnic interaction through the lens of family values: a case study of the Russian-Chinese student community

This article explores the role of family values in harmonizing interethnic interactions among Russian and Chinese students. In the context of globalization, understanding and integrating these values become crucial for fostering respectful relationships between individuals from different cultures. Aim. To identify common trends and culturally specific differences in the perception of family values to strengthen intercultural dialogue. Methods. Survey of 641 students from Pacific State University, of which 278 were Chinese and 363 were Russian students. The questionnaire assessed 12 key family values, such as care and support, financial security, and respect for elders. Statistical methods were used for data analysis. Results. The study revealed common trends and culturally specific differences in the perception of family values among Russian and Chinese students. For example, similarities were found in the importance of aspects such as emotional and psychological comfort and love and affection, indicating a universal need for emotional support and close relationships. Differences were observed in the perception of values such as kinship and family traditions, as well as respect for elders. Chinese students attach significantly greater importance to these aspects, reflecting the traditional focus on family and respect for elders in Chinese culture. Russian students demonstrate a more individualistic approach, preferring personal autonomy and independence. In conclusion, the importance of integrating family values into the mechanisms of harmonizing interethnic interactions is emphasized to create a favorable environment for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding in the student community. Specific strategies are proposed aimed at increasing awareness of each other cultural characteristics and values, which contributes to a deeper understanding and respect for cultural differences.
