Econometric analysis of the relationship between road infrastructure parameters and the dynamics of real gross regional product in the regions of the Siberian conurbation based on panel data for 2010–2024
The Siberian conurbation is considered in the article as an emerging polycentric spatial and economic system in southern Siberia, including the key economic centers of Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Tomsk and Barnaul, as well as adjacent territories of Novosibirsk Region, Kemerovo Region – Kuzbass, Tomsk Region and Altai Krai. The potential of this system is determined by the interaction of industrial, scientific, educational, logistics, service and agro-industrial centers; however, its realization depends significantly on the quality of transport connectivity, the condition of roads and the spatial density of the road network. Aim. To assess the statistical relationship between road infrastructure parameters and the dynamics of real gross regional product in the regions forming the core of the Siberian conurbation based on panel data for 2010–2024. The empirical framework includes four constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Novosibirsk Region, Kemerovo Region – Kuzbass, Tomsk Region and Altai Krai. Methodology. The study is based on the framework of statistical relationships rather than proof of strict causal effects. Forecast values for 2025–2026 are not included in the econometric model. Results. The results of panel estimation show that the lagged road quality indicator has a positive sign only in the baseline model with regional fixed effects, but its statistical robustness is not confirmed after including year fixed effects and control variables. Road density also does not demonstrate an independent robust relationship with the dynamics of real gross regional product. The most pronounced positive association is found for real fixed capital investment. The practical significance of the study lies in substantiating the transition from extensive expansion of road length to improvement of road quality, density and functional connectivity of interregional transport corridors.
