Media education of the young people in Russia: analysis of the pre-Soviet and Soviet stages of development. Part 1

The rapid transformation of the media sphere in modern conditions of technological development, the geopolitical context and the high level of public involvement in the use of digital devices has led to an unprecedented increase in the volume of information and the emergence of new risks. These risks include, for example, mind manipulation, the spread of disinformation, identity theft, the formation of false values and the propaganda of extremism. In these conditions, young people, as the most vulnerable age group to various kinds of influences, who form their worldview mainly in the media environment, need to develop media literacy as a key skill for personal safety and civic responsibility. Thus, it becomes critically important to carry out media education work with young people, while maintaining the methodological accuracy of the concept, and at the same time going beyond the narrow protectionist approach focused solely on protection from potential negative impacts emanating from the media environment. In order to form this most effective approach, evaluate and analyze the success of modern media literacy development practices, we need to follow the development of media education of young people in Russian history, including in comparison with the inextricably linked and parallel developing foreign media education. Aim. To identify the specifics of media education of young people in the context of Russian history from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Methods. Historical and sociological analysis, retrospective and chronological inductive analysis, structuring, reviewing scientific literature, official documents and regulatory legal acts, searching for relevant information and identifying dominant patterns, as well as media educational practices in the domestic and foreign information field, conducting content analysis of thematic materials in the Internet space. Results. The article analyzes the key stages in the development of media education in Russia since its inception in the early 20th century. The authors conclude that youth media education in Russia has come a long way from narrow film pedagogy to full-fledged institutionalization, with many past formats remaining relevant, transforming according to the context of the current era. However, media education in Russia is heavily dependent on the historical and political course of the state, with protectionist and career-oriented approaches dominating practice.
