Organization as an analogue of a living organism with metabolism, homeostasis and adaptation to the environment: three aspects of consideration
The article considers an organization as a complex living system with metabolism, homeostasis, and the ability to adapt to changes in the external and internal environment. It uses systematic and biological approaches to understanding the processes of management and development of organizations. The paper describes the key mechanisms of resource exchange and stability maintenance, as well as adaptation strategies and their application in business practice. The paper analyzes modern challenges and methods of increasing the sustainability of organizations in a dynamic market. Relevance. High uncertainty of the changing environment and the many challenges to the viability of the organization in the current conditions. Aim. To develop innovative sustainability management tools in conditions of instability and digital transformation of an organization as a complex living system. Methods. Systems approach (General Systems Theory by L. von Bertalanffy) and the biological approach to the analysis of management processes, as well as the theoretical framework of cybernetics (N. Wiener, W. Ashby), complexity theory (J. Holland) and the concept of antifragility (N. Taleb). Critical literature analysis (a review of more than 75 sources), supplemented by theoretical modeling and comparative analysis of organizations with biosystems, ecosystems and complex adaptive systems was the main method. Result. The paper describes the key mechanisms of resource exchange (organizational metabolism) and maintaining internal balance (homeostasis) through control and feedback systems, identifies adaptive strategies, including management of collective intelligence (distribution of cognitive functions) and consideration of corporate culture as the "immune system" of the organization. The authors have developed the hypothesis of antifragile management, involving the use of stressors, and for increasing sustainability they defined the role of external interactions within the business ecosystem (mutualism, cooperation) and the impact of financial innovation technologies (FinTech) on the metabolism of human capital. Conclusions. The sustainability and viability of an organization are achieved through a balanced metabolism of resources, maintaining homeostasis and adaptation through mechanisms of antifragility and overcoming resistance to change. Modern challenges of a dynamic market require the integration of cybernetics and complexity theory into management practices. To increase efficiency, it is necessary to introduce antifragile management (team coaching, OHI monitoring), the development of collective intelligence and the use of Big Data for forecasting within the framework of an ecosystem approach.
