The article is devoted to the generalization and clarification of the classification of factors affecting migration flows. In modern conditions of migration activity strengthening, the study of socio‐economic factors that form spatial heterogeneity of territories and affect the directions of migration flows acquires special significance. Relevance of the study is conditioned by the need to develop effective measures of regional policy aimed at regulating migration flows and reducing disproportions in the socio‐economic development of territories. Aim. To systematize socio‐economic factors that determine spatial heterogeneity and cause migration flows. Methods. Comparative analysis and data grouping. This allowed us to identify key groups of factors, including income levels, job availability, social infrastructure, quality of life, as well as institutional and demographic features of the regions. Results. Migration activity of the population is determined by the complex interaction of various factors, with the most significant impact of the level of economic development of the territory and opportunities for professional realization. The conclusion is made about the need to develop regionally oriented measures of social and economic support aimed at equalizing territorial development and reducing migration outflow from sparsely populated areas.
